This cicada page is from ScienceMan Dan’s notebook. He did an awesome drawing and has lots of good information on it too. When you nature journal it is good to always write the date, the scientific name, and your source. Then also write down important facts you have learned or know about the species.
ScienceMan’s Cicada Findings:
The cicada is an insect belonging to the family Cicadidae . It is commonly found all over the world with as many as 3000 species. The Magicicada is the genus belonging to most of the cicadas in VA. Yet the one in the picture below looks to me like its a Tibicen because of the location of the eyes and width of its body.
It seems that the cicada sounds are dying down for the winter the males make the sounds during breeding season to attract the females.
When I took the picture I was walking home from the park. It was a very hot day and on the side of the road I saw a dying cicada. It was walking slowly on the side walk trying to find shade. I took a picture and pushed it to a cooler spot off the road. I’m so glad I got to see one so up close.
